Our Black Bear® line is engineered to perform as an improved aggregate alternative to perlite. Black Bear® biochar enhances Sunshine® blends with functional aesthetics that promote aeration, drainage, and nutrient retention.
What is biochar?
100% organic, carbon-rich by-product of forest products, including sawmill and lumber remnants that are typically burned.
What does it do?
A sustainable alternative to perlite, produced from renewable biomass and delivers comparable aeration and drainage in growing media without relying on mined, non-renewable mineral resources.
Last fall, I began trialing Sun Gro Black Bear while still using Sunshine Mix #15, a bark-based mix with perlite. I noticed improved consistency and stronger root development across crops. I’ve now switched 100% of greenhouse operations to Black Bear, and it has made a real difference in the uniformity and overall performance of the plants.
